Never Stop Learning

As I celebrated my 60th birthday this month, it might seem to some that I’ve seen and done it all. Definitely not true. In fact, it’s the opposite. Each day I’m amazed at what I don’t know.

As I celebrated my 60th birthday this month, it might seem to some that I’ve seen and done it all. Definitely not true. In fact, it’s the opposite. Each day I’m amazed at what I don’t know.

That’s why I enjoy my job and career choice because I get paid to learn new things each and every day. In my travels, I have met many in our industry with similar curiosity about improving themselves.

I mention this because I recently received a press release from the PMPA (Precision Machined Products Association) regarding a new program the association has instituted to recognize and document those “learners” in our industry. Called Continuing Education Units (CEU), they will be awarded for those individuals who participate in the associations various learning opportunities.

The idea was born in early 2013 as an output from the association’s strategic planning committee meeting. Both the planning committee and the PMPA board recognize ongoing skills development as a critical need for the association’s members and the precision machining industry. Technology is changing so fast that becoming obsolete in ones skill sets is increasingly a possibility.

“The greatest need for our companies today is qualified talent to help our shops compete at the highest level,” says PMPA President Ron Bracalente. His company, Bracalente Manufacturing Group, knows these problems first hand.

Earning CEU credits is a win-win for employees and employers. The employer now has documented proof of ongoing workforce training, and the employee can demonstrate to his or her employer or future employer a commitment to skill development.

The program begins in September when the association’s fall events schedule kicks in.
