Youth Get Hands-On Experience. Students at a Vermont school now have the opportunity to use a new manual/CNC lathe right in their classroom. The Harrison Alpha Plus 330S from REM Sales (East Granby, Connecticut) recently was sold to the River Valley Technical Center. The facility, which is part of the Howard Dean Educational Center, is using the lathe as part of its 2-year manufacturing program that aligns with the NIMS accreditation and certification program. The students work under manual and stops modes before progressing onto RS232 G and M code programs. Students get up to 90 minutes a day on the machine and must manufacture competency parts on the machines they are trained on. In addition to the high school students, adults at four other post-secondary institutions also have the opportunity to access the manufacturing lab and the lathe.
