A recent addition to Production Machining’s print edition (appearing in the PMPA section) is a monthly feature titled “Craftsman’s Cribsheet.” This one-pager identifies “tear-out” ideas about management, technical, quality and regulatory topics, presenting them in bullet-point fashion.

The most recent Cribsheet, in the February issue, explains why service trumps quality and price in delivering on customer requirements. Quality is generally set by technological constraints and customer expectations, and near market price is a given. It’s a shop’s ability to beat its competitors in delivery times and delivering on difficult production requirements that builds customer loyalty.

Last month’s Cribsheet focused on the quality function as value-added overhead. It addresses how quality can help an organization make more money by acting as a support function to the operations and sales groups. Quality can simplify systems and processes and provide documentation and customer response to allow other areas of the company to operate more efficiently.
