Fire suppression systems go a long way in helping to protect equipment (and employees). In shops that run lights-out shifts, these systems are even more significant as the entire facility is at greater risk.

On-machine fire suppression systems, which use a heat sensing mechanism to automatically release an extinguishing agent, can be very effective in quickly saving a machine when a fire is detected in the machine’s enclosure. Many of these systems use pressure vessels, manifolds, nozzles and pipework that are installed in the machine to distribute a suppression agent that reduces a fire’s heat or oxygen levels. But here’s a system that significantly reduces these installation and maintenance expenses while providing an environmentally friendly potassium-based aerosol that suppresses fire by chemically interfering with the free radicals of flame.

The Stat-X suppression system, from Fireaway Inc., functions similarly to halon systems, but does not lead to ozone depletion. Plus, the company says the suppression agent is ten times more effective than halon in extinguishing fires.

Read “A Clean Fire Prevention Alternative for Machine Tools” for more information about the system and how it works. To learn about a shop whose machine was saved by the system, read “Fire Blazes Path to Shop Safety.”
