The National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF) is moving its annual SUR/FIN conference and trade show from this summer to November 2-4, 2021. The event, originally scheduled for July, will remain in Detroit, Michigan, at the TCF Center.

“While moving the event from its scheduled date in July to November was not a decision that the association took lightly, we believe that moving the event to the third quarter of 2021 will show a trend toward a more normalized environment and lead to a very successful SUR/FIN 2021,” says Steve Smith, chairman of the NASF SUR/FIN steering committee.

NASF SUR/FIN’s goal is to provide the finishing community and the broader market with a live surface finishing show in a comfortable, safe environment. Given the current situation, organizers also want to ensure they have sufficient time to plan the best possible experience for exhibitors, speakers and attendees.

There are many benefits from moving the show to November, including the possibility of significant medical breakthroughs regarding vaccinations and therapeutics, which makes the outlook better for live events in the later in the year. The state of Michigan is also expected to ease restrictions on large gatherings beginning in the second quarter. That coincides with an expected easement of corporate travel restrictions in the second half of 2021.

The delay also gives attendees time to plan and gives venue and event industry suppliers time to recover. The event industry has been greatly impacted by the pandemic, and the date change gives the industry and the convention center a chance to implement best practices for a successful event.
