The Top Shops program at IMTS this year has a “By Top Shops, for Top Shops” theme.

Modern Machine Shop’s Top Shops event returns at this year’s IMTS 2018, one of the largest industrial trade shows in the world. This one-day workshop takes place on Thursday, September 13 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, and hopes to deliver actionable insights based on input from real machining businesses that can be taken back to a business and applied immediately.

The technical program and peer-to-peer discussion deliver practical solutions and business strategies that complement the variety of cutting-edge technologies on-display at IMTS 2018. The theme this year is “by Top Shops, for Top Shops” with topics related to machining, like turning and five-axis and automation; shopfloor practices like lean manufacturing and machine monitoring; business strategies like customer retention, sales and marketing; and human resources like compensation and professional development.

The technical program will open with an in-depth examination of the 2018 Top Shops data with Gardner Business Media Director of Intelligence Steve Kline, Jr. identifying specific metrics that define and differentiate best-in-class machining businesses. Immediately following Mr. Kline’s presentation, this year’s Top Shops Honorees will participate in a panel moderated by MMS’ Editor-in-Chief Peter Zelinski to discuss practical, real-life explanations of how these shops developed category expertise in specific areas vital to not just running, but building a successful machining business.
