With the labor shortage at an all-time high, it is more important than ever for machine shop technology to be intuitive. Markus Stolmar, the CEO and president of United Grinding, put it best at the company’s Evolution to Revolution event, saying, “We need to make it easier for people to operate our machines.”

As a “newbie” in the precision machining industry, I can attest to the fact that sometimes I feel like I’m learning a different language. I can only imagine the challenges employees that are new to the industry face when trying to learn how to operate a machine. Nonetheless, today’s machine shop employees must be able to use a machine with confidence. This is exactly why United Grinding created Customer Oriented REvolution (C.O.R.E.).

C.O.R.E. is a new control platform that simplifies programming, setup and operation while enabling easy communication with other machines. It was unveiled for the first time at EMO Milano 2021.It was most recently displayed at the company headquarters in Miamisburg, Ohio, during its Evolution to Revolution event, representing the North American introduction of the technology.

C.O.R.E. technology is said to feature an intuitive design with self-explanatory buttons and only shows relevant keys based on the status of the machine. Its display enables operators to use the touchscreen with or without gloves. It also offers a customizable dashboard, options for virtual sticky notes, a clear task list with details included and more.

Specifications include a 24" full HD multi-touch display, a 16-position rotary override switch, electronic key switch (RFID), an integrated front camera, Bluetooth compatibility, 2× USB ports and an adjustable tilt.

The main goal of developing C.O.R.E. was to ensure connectivity, such as the exchange of data between people, machines, and the production environment, and to create the basis for the operation of modern IoT applications. Additionally, the technology is intended to create an intuitive operation and make work easier and more efficient for machine setters, operators and maintenance staff.

TITANS of CNC and UNITED GRINDING

Titan Gilroy of TITANS of CNC, and Markus Stolmar, share the stage at the event.

In addition to the unveiling of C.O.R.E, the two-day Evolution to Revolution event featured keynote speaker, Titan Gilroy from Titans of CNC, United Grinding technical demonstrations, and presentations from Oelheld, Haimer, Norton Abrasives, Blaser and Marposs. To top off the event, Blaser even brought its hot air balloons for any guest to take a ride on!

Since I began working for Production Machining at the beginning of the pandemic, Evolution to Revolution was my first experience at a company press conference (and inside a manufacturing facility in general). It was fascinating to learn about technology that is opening doors for new people to be a part of the industry. I hope that C.O.R.E. will enable even more people to take advantage of all the things manufacturing has to offer.
