Video: Watch Flat Turning for Machining Polygons

Machining flats in a single handling is shown on this video from Okuma. The workpiece and cutter are rotated synchronously with a defined rotation frequency ratio, depending on the number of lobes needed to be machined.

Polygon turning has been around for a long time. Sometimes the geometry of a given part requires that flats be machined onto round parts. Historically, that would require a secondary operation on a machining center or other machine tool.

Recent advances in synchronization between a turning center main spindle and an auxiliary polygon turning tool allows the operation to be performed on a standard turning center without the need to move the workpiece to a second machine. This allows for processing the workpiece complete in a single handling, saving time and delivering better accuracy.

Machine tool builder, Okuma, has recently released an informative video demonstrating the process of machining polygons that are available on the company’s OSP CNC. The workpiece and cutter are rotated synchronously with a defined rotation frequency ratio, depending on the number of lobes needed to be machined.

This short video on Okuma's website shows the how the process is accomplished.
