OnRobot Gecko Gripper Replaces Vacuum Solutions

Grippers from OnRobot offers an alternative to vacuum solutions, replacing compressed air with tactile technology that adheres to surfaces the same way geckos climb.

OnRobot's Gecko Gripper uses millions of micro-scaled fibrillar stalks that adhere to a surface the same way that geckos climb. The gripper enables robots to pick up flat, smooth objects with energy savings over existing grippers such as vacuum grippers, according to the company. The gripper is said to interface with any robot. It affixes to a range of surfaces including fragile items. The company says that it also offers advantages over electrostatic grippers, which are weaker and require high-voltage systems to operate.

In addition, an update to the company’s RG2-FT gripper features a built-in force/torque sensing, supporting work in piece detection and centering. With inbuilt six-axis F/T and proximity laser sensors at the fingertips, this gripper can see and feel objects, enabling fast deployment of collaborative applications and high productivity.
