Horn Supermini HP Performs Multiple Functions as One Tool
PMTS 2023: The cutting concept enables higher infeed rates compared to standard small bore tooling.
The Supermini HP system from Horn is designed for drilling, boring, facing and turning with a single high-performance tool. The cutting concept is said to enable higher infeed rates compared to standard small bore tooling. During boring, the cutting profile enables an accurate 90-degree shoulder at the base. In addition, the trailing cutting edge is engineered with a wiper geometry, designed to produce high surface qualities even at higher feed rates.
Not limited to turning operations, the system is also suitable for drilling into solid material in diameters ranging from 3 mm (0.118") to 7 mm (0.276"). To minimize tool deflection and maximize depth, all diameter variants are offered with length-to-diameter ratio options of either 1.5 or 2.5. While the drilling performance data of the tool cannot compete with standard drills, the wide range of processes built into a single solution saves valuable tool positions, the company says. The Supermini HP offers the option of immediately boring an inner contour after drilling — without needing to change the tool.
To address various chipbreaking and application needs, Horn provides two geometry options. For primarily turning, the 0.1 variant with a chipbreaker is recommended. The non-chipbreaker version 0.2 — or universal geometry — is used for drilling. The slightly twisted flute evacuates chips from the component bore and machining zone. All tools are offered in Horn’s EG35 grade, which is said to excel at the machining of normal and stainless steels due to increased wear resistance, retention of edge acuity and dense HiPiMS nanostructure.
The Supermini HP can be fitted to numerous standard Supermini 105 holders as well as the ultrarigid wedge clamp system. This wedge design is a great complement to both the higher cutting parameters of the multifunctional tool and the tight work envelopes of Swiss machining platforms, the company says.
