Parting and Grooving with Five Edges
While five-edged grooving and parting inserts are not new, here’s an economical solution for parting diameters as large as 40 mm. This alternative to the standard circlip-type grooving system offers five cutting edges with fast indexing from either side.

The PentaIQGrip line, from Iscar Metals Inc., has a dovetail clamping structure designed to ensure a face contact of the insert, meaning that the insert is very rigid in the pocket and therefore capable of recessing and holding side forces. These characteristics help to improve straightness and surface finish for parting applications.
The clamping mechanism is designed for easy and quick cutting edge and insert indexing. Three insert sizes are available for parting 22-, 32-, and 40-mm diameters.

The article also discusses Iscar’s recent move to more aggressively address the Swiss machining market with products such as its SwissCut line of turning, grooving, parting and threading inserts.
