Speedgrip Chuck Workholding Solutions Reduce Setup Times

IMTS 2024: Speedgrip Chuck Co. showcases its QCR quick-change receiver to attach to CNC lathe spindles, as well two turning chucks designed to reduce the amount of time needed to change clamping and other workholding devices.

Speedgrip Chuck Co. is displaying the QCR quick-change receiver, along with its other workholding solutions. The QCR is a manually actuated cam-lock receiving plate that attaches to CNC lathe spindles and can reduce the time needed to change workholding clamping devices. Similar to tool retention in the spindle, the QCR features automatic release of draw connections. With the QCR, the time needed for operators to switch ID/OD collets, jaw chucks or face driver workholding devices on their machines is said to be cut from an hour to five minutes.

The QCR quick-change receiver is available for all standard nose configurations, for spindle sizes that run from A2-5 through A11 and flatback spindles. Designed for added versatility, the QCR also comes in a through-hole design for through-spindle bar feeding operations.

Speedgrip Chuck Company is also expanding its standard workholding solutions offerings with two turning chucks. Designed to reduce setup time and quickly center tapered parts for efficient machining, the Ball Lock Power Chuck and Quick Change 3-Jaw Chuck are the latest additions to Speedgrip’s portfolio of standard precision workholding mandrels, collets and general machining jaw chucks.

The Ball Lock Power Chuck is a three-jaw chuck used for ID and OD clamping of castings and forgings or OD gripping of shafts. The chuck can pull back workpieces with tapered surfaces of up to 10 degrees while providing an automatic radial right and left adjustable angle compliance of ±5 degrees with clamping force. Ball Lock chucks are available as an adapter or direct mount. They can come in seven different sizes, ranging from 6″ to 21″, and in several configurations, including a self-centering version and compensating chuck with center or plug. The chuck is also available in a two-jaw configuration.

The Quick Change Three-Jaw Chuck, with its large through-hole capacity, comes with two sets of master jaws, which can enable offline pre-assembly of top tooling for the next job. This is said to reduce traditional setup time by 95%. The presetting fixture can provide ±0.0005″ repeatability between jaw changes and accommodate for chuck sizes ranging from 6″ to 24″. For the Quick Change Three-Jaw Chuck, Speedgrip offers its monoblock jaws. Made from a nitride material that can enable hardening after forming without significant distortion, the mono block jaws’ one-piece design without jaw bolt obstructions aims for shops to work closer to the chuck face. The blocks are also compatible with all standard jaw chucks.

Both chucks are said to maintain high clamping forces at high rpm with low centrifugal force loss.
