A Colchester Tornado A50 CNC lathe, equipped with a bar feed, Renishaw probing, tool monitoring, pickoff unit, swarf conveyor and production-scheduling software, is providing lights-out production capability for Altex Engineering, a (Calne, Wiltshire) U.K. precision subcontractor that specializes in turning and milling in addition to sheet metal fabrication using laser cutting, punch press and folding equipment. With the new CNC lathe, Altex has increased productivity by more than 50 percent on a range of turned components, some 80 percent of which are now completely machined in a single setup.

Compact bar feeders deliver the performance and capacity needed for this turning cell to run in a largely unattended mode.
Read MoreThe Benefits of Tool Monitoring
With millions of manufacturing jobs going overseas to cheap labor countries, companies today are struggling to keep part costs competitive. The machining industry has had to look for various ways to reduce the cost of the parts being machined. One of the most popular ways to reduce part cost is lights-out, or unattended, machining.
Read MoreWhat Is The Best Bar Feed System For Production Turning?
Selecting the right bar feeder can be one of the most important decisions a shop can make. Bar feed systems help improve productivity, throughput and quality, but in order to achieve the most benefit from them it is essential that a bar feed system be matched to the particular needs of the turning operation.
Read MoreWhy Short Magazine Bar Loaders Are Efficient
So when are long bars and hydraulic magazine barfeeders justified? Typically, the best applications for long bar magazine feeders are found when production quantities are large (where the batch size exceeds 5,000) or when the workpiece is over 8 inches long and there are relatively few changeovers (one every 2 weeks or so). In most other cases, short barfeeders usually tend to be more efficient and a better investment. But let's analyze the reasons and find out why.
